PAEP Poster - “Basketball Boy”

School-aged children are being negatively affected by chemicals including "scent" in ever increasing numbers. For some students a reaction to "scent" can precipitate an Anaphylactic Reaction.

Some schools such as Crescent Collegiate High School in Newfoundland, Canada have instituted a strict "no-scent" policy in parallel to bans on peanuts and other allergens in order to protect the health of their student populations.   Some children with severe allergies can go on to develop a condition called Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. Read what the National Fibromyalgia Association has to say about Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) and the severity of some "scent" allergies.
Symptoms can be: "mild to life-threatening and include headache, trouble concentrating, nausea, diarrhoea, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, dizziness, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat, and seizures. MCS symptoms in children include red cheeks and ears, dark circles under the eyes, hyperactivity, and behaviour or learning problems. After an exposure, symptoms may occur immediately or be delayed for up to a few days. Reactions may last from a few seconds to weeks or months. What Causes MCS? Many people have developed MCS after being exposed to chemicals in a newly built home, recently remodelled office, or following a pesticide or solvent exposure. Others slowly become ill over a period of years."    Feel Free to Request this Poster for your Child's School.
